This image depicts the Pilgrim Ships Mayflower and Speedwell as they
depart Southampton, England, August 5, 1620 on their way to the New World.
Days later, the Speedwell began to take on water and was eventually
left behind at Plymouth in Devon. After
transferring passengers and stores to the Mayflower, 102 men, women and
children finally set sail on September 6, 1620 for the crossing to America.
